As some of you know, I have an iPhone and an iPod touch. My iPhone has been acting up a bit lately. I haven't been able to use my USB cable without pressing hard to keep it making contact. So I didn't feel it was safe to try to upgrade the firmware on it until this issue is resolved.
I was at MacWorld Expo today and watched Steve's Keynote. I've seen the videos of the 1.1.3 firmware and wanted it. So, that left upgrading my jailbroken iPod touch. I haven't had much time to really get hooked on the jailbreak way of life, so was pretty easily persuaded to go back to the straight and narrow with the 1.1.3 firmware even though there is currently no way to jailbreak 1.1.3.
So I tried to upgrade. Here's what I did and what happened. I upgraded to iTunes 7.6. Then I plugged in the iPod touch. Then I clicked the Restore button. Unfortunately, the only option that gave me was to upgrade and restore. No, just restore, restore.
I wanted that upgrade, so went ahead with the hope that upgrade and restore would work on my jailbroken iPod touch which had started its life as firmware 1.1.2 and then went back to 1.1.1 to jailbreak and then back up to 1.1.2 with the iPhone apps and a few other things added.
It did seem to work. I got the option to buy the upgrade and pressed the button and did purchase the upgrade. I was a little confused after that but my iPod touch did seem to get the new apps.
What I saw first in iTunes was just iPod and it didn't show a sync button. That was a little ominous. I dismounted the iPod touch and played with it a bit. It had the new apps. I tried to see if they worked and was able to get my gmail email account working. It worked.
I plugged the iPod touch back into my Mac and it started syncing. That took a few minutes. It is done now and the version now says Version 1.1.3 (with software upgrade). I'm good to go. Now I hope Apple does some good stuff and I don't regret it should jail breaking the 1.1.3 prove impossible.
This new iPod touch is pretty cool. Being able to save my favorite web pages as launchpad icons is a big improvement. I can rearrange the icons and have up to 9 home pages if I like. My first 3 web page buttons are Pocket Tweets, Solitaire and Mobile New York Times. I've got one more spot left on page one to fill.
Also, the email that got setup automatically shows me a whole bunch of folders not just the inbox by default. I will need to explore that further but it seems an improvement. Yeah, this is working for me right now.
Update Jan 16 8:26 pm: happily my iPhone seems to be better and I went ahead and upgraded it to 1.1.3. Very happy with 1.1.3 new features and looking forward to even more. Now I want to customize the icons for the buttons - especially the web page ones that come out kind of funky and indistinguishable in most cases by default.
