Importing from Address Book to Studio Manager

Address_book_manipulator

A new version of a FileMaker Plug-in called Address Book Manipulator was released last week. This is great news for new Studio Manager customers who would like to bring their Address Book entries into Studio Manager.

Even without buying this plug-in which costs $60, you can use their demo to pull All Contacts from Address Book into a free demo FileMaker file. That takes all of a minute. From there, you can import that data directly into Studio Manager. This could be a huge time saver for some folks!

I've got more details on my FileMaker Fever blog.

Studio Manager 7 runs perfectly in FileMaker 8

Filemaker 8 Advanced Box

Just in case you saw the announcement this week that FileMaker Pro 8 has been released (Monday, August 29), I wanted you to know that Studio Manager 7 is compatible with 8. You can upgrade any time without worrying about it. See my FileMaker Fever blog for more information about FileMaker 8.

On the other hand, if you are running Studio Manager 3 or 4, you'll need to upgrade to Studio Manager 7 before you can upgrade to FileMaker 7 or 8. Because the file format of 7 and 8 is the same but is very different than the format for FileMaker 6 and prior. Basically, FileMaker 7/8 is a complete rewrite of FileMaker and the architecture is quite different. The downside of that is that you can't open a complex application like Studio Manager in 7 or 8 and have it just work like you've always been able to do with every other FileMaker upgrade.

I will be announcing more news about our upcoming version of Studio Manager which will be called Studio Manager 8 in the near future. Please stay tuned. And don't hesitate to use the email link on this page or even call me personally if you have questions about any of this.

Studio Manager 7 is OS X 10.4 Tiger Compatible

Tiger X Left Black Studio Manager 7 is Tiger-compatible. The basis of that compatibility is that FileMaker 7 is and has been announced by FileMaker Inc. as being Tiger-compatible. As far as I can tell FileMaker 6 is also Tiger-compatible and thus previous versions of Studio Manager are also very, very likely to be Tiger-compatible. I've been opening older versions of Studio Manager in FileMaker 6 without any problems whatsoever.

On the other hand, Stuffit Expander has been giving me fits. I've been moving more and more towards using Zip as my compression technology for sharing files because it is cross-platform and has proven compatible under more circumstances than Stuffit.
