I held one in my hand and put it in my pocket yesterday. A light 3.6 oz compared to 5.6. Very comfortable in the pocket. I like this green one. Silver is my second favorite. Also comes in gold, blue and pink. But, not what I had in mind. I wanted smaller still. And mostly, I wanted it to hit the $199 price point or lower.
This is one failing of Apple from the beginning. The original 128k Mac was supposed to be affordable and come in around $1000 in 1984 but wound up at $2500. This iPod mini was probably meant to be $199 but perfectionism and accounting put it into the $249 slot. Now you save only $50 compared to the regular iPod 15 gb (the new low-end).
All is not lost. This is an evolutionary device. I'm still looking for the color screen and the watch, but here's what you get with the mini:
- Metallic colors
- Anodized - less easily scratched
- Recessed screen - won't scratch as easily
- 4 gb hard drive - 70 hrs of music
- 36% lighter
- 40% less bulk
- 17% cheaper
